Multicultural Report - June 2010

This year, each class chose a different country and studied its culture under the following headings:-
-Clothes
-Food
-Customs, e.g. celebrations
-Religion
-Money
-Industry

Generally speaking, the chosen country was dictated by the fact that a child from that country was in the class. Each teacher did a Powerpoint presentation on the findings, at assembly in June. This was a very interesting project and involved a lot of preparation. The teachers and children alike learned lots about many different countries, their people and their culture, the objective being to deepen our understanding of the non-national children in our classes, and to encourage friendships among the children.
The countries studied were as follows:-
1 class: Burma and the Karen community
2class: China
3 class: Germany
4 class: Hungary
5 class: Canada

Multicultural Report: June 2011

Multicultural Day, 2011 was highly successful. It was decided to link up Multiculturism this year, with the curriculum but with a different twist, i.e. using our new music programme - The Rite Note, as our inspiration. Every class would explore a different culture through song and take one assembly at the end of the year to present their projects.
Our presentations took place at assembly on the 24 June, and each class participated through song, poetry music, drama, dance and Art. A very varied and interesting programme was achieved and in doing so, we tried to represent all the children from other countries attending our school.
The purpose of our annual project is to show the children that Culleens N.S. welcomes people, especially children, from other countries and traditions. Also, we in Culleens like to enrich our own experiences by participating in the cultures and traditions of other people. We want to collaborate, share, work and learn together with all the people we meet in our school.
We want all the children in Culleens to know that even though you are not from the same country as others, it doesn’t mean that you can’t fit in. No matter about your race, colour or accent, we are all humans and are the same.... celebrating multiculturalism makes everyone feel at home.
We in Culleens plan to continue every year in making some small contribution to bringing countries together rather than focusing on the things that make us different.
